Isn't She Lovely

There are many beautiful things about being a Southerner. We are a proud region that has a complicated personality bred from a complicated past.
I get so tired of people wanting to gloss over history instead of talking about it like the reality it was. When you have institutionalized slavery that goes on for centuries where one side not only took dominion over another but did so because they don't even consider them humans, that affects how people relate to each other.
It affects how people view each other. It affects the opportunities that one person has access to that another doesn't simply because of skin color.
I also get tired of the south being portrayed as the land of ignorant hicks and violent racists. We are a complex people just like any other regional group in this country. There are plenty of intelligent Southern bred people who understand the power and destruction of the words used to maintain these levels of oppression. There are still subtle ways in our cultural habits and words with weight that are solely designed to cause harm.
I am not surprised that chef Paula Deen has used the "n" word to refer to a black person - just like I know many black people who use derogatory words for white people when in friendly company.
I don't know that she is a racist. Racists have to use their power to discriminate against those who are not of their same race. Based on what has been revealed about what else Deen said in regard to her feelings about life in the south in the good old days and the novelty of employee uniforms for dinner parties, I do feel however that she is seriously racially insensitive and racially ignorant as to the effect of her words.
That is unfortunate since her entire empire is based on her talent as a chef and public opinion of her personality.
The whole thing has the feeling of "I'm sorry I got caught" more than "I'm sorry because I know what I said was disrespectful."
As a southerner, I resent the attitude of "that's just how things are in the south with people of a certain age." I resent the attitude of trying to romanticize an era that was nothing short of horrific.
Americans have done some vile, disgusting, horrific, despicable, monstrous things to each other and justified it by God and by law.
We have turned on each other and gone without speaking civil words to each other. We have killed each other. We have hated each other.
We also have loved each other. We have supported and celebrated each other. We have forgiven each other and have created families with each other bonded by blood and by circumstance.
America is great not because it was founded on Judeo-Christian beliefs, or because of capitalism or because of our military might. No, America is great because it was founded on the idea of giving anyone a fair shot at becoming great or at least bettering their place in the world. Every American, no matter how they came to be Americans, is a product of an ancestor or relative who truly believed in the principles of equality, freedom, and justice.
We believe equally in the sovereignty of the individual and the power of the community. We are great because we are and have always been known as the Land of Opportunity.
We cannot gloss over the fact, however, that this reputation is built upon the backs of races of people who were oppressed and victimized. Let us not forget that there are certain parts of our population who have had to pay for every right, every freedom, and every privilege with blood. Let us keep from skirting around how centuries of this affected generations in ways we don't fully understand.
And it's not just that Deen used a word but that she thought it was okay to have a slavery-era themed party, complete with servants dressed and acting as slaves. That demonstrates an attitude of insensitivity and disrespect that boggles the mind.
My opinion on celebrity screw-ups has matured over the years. I feel that if someone has offended you, Cardinals 50 Adam Wainwright Road Cool Base Grey 2010 All Star Jerseys you make your voice heard either by your vote or your wallet. I don't care whether Paula Deen used the Yankees 24 Robinson Cano Red 2010 All Star Jerseys word once or every day.
It's not what they call you; it's what you answer to
I do care that if she truly has black people in her life that she professes to love like family then how can she look at them and justify romanticizing an era of our history that was deplorable, immoral and completely against everything upon which our country was supposedly founded?
She will bounce back from this scandal and hopefully our American family will have the uncomfortable conversations that need to be had because of this. Otherwise, the outrage is unnecessary and America isn't the place it claims to be.

Heaven for fashion devotees
The late Martin Spector started this company in New York's garment district in 1949. After choosing a vacation in San fran with his wife, Lucy, they opened within 1952. It is a family-run business.
Britex is really a must-see stop for fashion and costume designers, celebrities and the curious. We're sorry we weren't inside the maintain day that , and shoe designer entered together to go. "Cher is here, so has , and , among others," says Spector's daughter, , who oversees the daily operations. A lot more well-known names are sprinkled throughout the 40,000-strong mailing list.
To build the vast selection (the need for which Spector declines to reveal), she makes 4-5 buying trips per year to Europe and Asia, searching for fabulous fabrics.
"I'm a lot guided by my taste, first of all and foremost, I'm in search of quality," she says. For spring, her mind was on cheery colors.
"I went seeking wonderful brights," she says. "There's definitely a movement away from sobering classics for spring and summer. I was consumed by all of the beautiful blues and clear oranges. I do believe you will find there's great need now for brightness and heat."
A year ago, the very first time, Britex collaborated together with the Academy of Art University fashion school, providing numerous yards of material for a few of the graduate students' fall 2009 collections.
"We came up with a solid idea of non colored documents and shades of gray in double-faced wools, mohairs, metallics and knits. The climate we wanted to project was graphic and extremely S . fransisco," Spector said. Students showed their collections at New york city Fashion Week in February, and definately will suggest to them again with the big graduate student visible on April 23.
Whether you might be a beginner or have been sewing for several years, should you have something, the workers can answer it. A lot more than 40 employees - some young fashion school graduates, others sewing veterans - are on hand with tape measures and scissors, loads of knowledge, and in addition they speak multiple languages. New merchandise arrives everyday, whether it's a delivery from abroad or unused bolts from top designers' current collections.
"I just went back from a visit with all the guys at (the modern York designer team of and ). They merely piled-up mountains of fabric for their showroom floor therefore we went them over. Those 100 rolls were just shipped to us."
Several months after a new collection is sent to stores, the leftover fabric is extremely prone to enroll in Britex. "We order from Diane von Furstenberg, , , and ," Spector says. "We get a lot of beautiful wools from Calvin Klein and Donna Karan so we purchase a lot from Tahari."
Looking for a button to increase that wool jacket you wish to create? There are thousands of those little gems for the third floor - vintage and contemporary, they're created from glass, wood, metal, rhinestones, plastic Lucite, Bakelite, take your pick - categorized by color and trapped in long rectangular drawers.

ST. THOMAS - While it was not the full amount the V.I. Superior Court asked for, the V.I. Legislature gave the court $2.7 million Friday to get it through the end of the current fiscal year.
In addition to the $2.7 million, the Senate passed an amendment Friday authorizing the court to tap into any savings from prior years.
Sen. Clifford Graham said the savings, coupled with the Yankees 42 Mariano Rivera red 2010 All Star Jerseys $2.7 million appropriation, would bring the court's supplemental budget to about $4.4 million.
Earlier this month, Superior Court Presiding Judge Darryl Donohue Sr. told senators he would need $5.5 million to get to the end of the fiscal year.
After the bill was passed Friday, Donohue told The Daily News that the $4.4 million should work provided no surprise expenditures are required between now and Sept. 30.
Donohue said a jury trial where the jury needs to be sequestered or something similar could tip the balance and cause problems meeting payroll and basic obligations.
"All we can do is do the best we can with what we got," he said. "We'll see where this takes us."
In a Finance Committee hearing June 18, Donohue explained that the court asked for a $31.9 million budget for Fiscal Year 2013. He said the court's personnel costs alone would total about $22 million.
The Superior Court was appropriated $23 million to cover all expenses for the fiscal year, resulting in a serious budget shortfall.
On Thursday, senators amended the bill to appropriate $5.5 million for the court, dropping the amount down to $2.7 million. When the measure came to the floor Friday, a second amendment was added to allow the use of prior years' savings.
Donohue said something certainly is better than nothing.
"For right now, I'm thankful for Cardinals 50 Adam Wainwright Road Cool Base Grey 2010 All Star Jerseys what they've given us," he said. "Hopefully that will get us through the fiscal year.
